How We Design Your Roof

We design your roof like we were going to live in your home.

If replacing a roof is so easy, why would a company go to all the trouble of designing a roofing system, running ventilation calculations, checking NOAA weather reports and choosing materials proven in industry-accepted lab testing?

I’m glad you asked. Because a roof isn’t just shingles. It’s a system, and every part of your house affects how long it lasts. Get one piece wrong, and even the best shingle fails early.

We sweat the details.

A complete inspection

The roof, the attic, every ceiling room by room, the soffits and the gutters. Not just the shingles.

An aerial inspection

Drone imagery of every slope, valley and piece of flashing, including the spots you can’t see from a ladder.

Computer measurements

Precise measurements of your roof, so you only pay for what you need.

Ventilation calculations

Intake against exhaust, optimized. Your roof lasts longer, and your utility bills go down.

A study of the foliage around your house

Tree coverage tells us whether algae will be a problem, and which shingle is right.

NOAA weather reports

The storm history for your area tells us how tough your roof needs to be.

Materials proven in the lab

Materials backed by industry-accepted lab testing, like the UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating.

What we check, step by step

Before we arrive

  • Your trees and vegetation. The tree coverage and foliage around your house: which trees hang over the roof, which shade it, and what drops on it.
  • Your weather. The weather history for your area: hail, wind and storms.
  • Your roof’s layout. Satellite measurements and the shape of the roof: every slope, valley and wall where water collects.

On the roof

  • Drone imagery of the whole roof, from every angle.
  • Walking the roof where needed, to check the decking underfoot.
  • The layout problems most roofers miss: missing channels, dead valleys and improperly placed ventilation.
  • Flashing, around every wall, chimney, pipe and vent.
  • Granule loss, checked in the gutters. The granules in your gutters tell us how fast your shingles are wearing.

The ventilation analysis

  • Intake and exhaust, measured against each other so airflow is optimized. The wrong balance traps heat and moisture under your roof.
  • Soffit vents, checked to make sure they’re clear and there are enough of them.

In the attic

  • Insulation, so your shingles don’t get cooked from underneath and wear out early.
  • Airflow, from intake to exhaust.
  • Decking, checked from underneath.
  • Water lines and AC lines close to the decking. A roofing nail can puncture them. If we find any, we install 2x4s between the decking and the lines to protect them.

Inside your home

  • A room-by-room check of the ceilings for coffee-colored water stains, the early sign of a leak.

Then we design it

Only after all of that do we choose your shingles, underlayment, ventilation and gutters, designed for your house, not pulled off the truck. All of it, from the trees and the weather to the attic and the ventilation, goes into our database to create the optimal design for your complete roofing system.

Why roofs aren’t better already

Roofs could be so much better. The problem is that nobody in the chain has a reason to make them better. Roofers get paid the same whether your roof lasts 12 years or 30, so the fastest, cheapest install wins. Builders spend their money where buyers look, the kitchens and the baths, and put builder-grade on the roof. Architects design for how the house looks, not how the roof performs. Nobody is paid to make your roof last longer or run more efficiently.

We do it because it’s the right thing to do.
